Fail #2: sun burn blisters

Day 5: Santa Barbara

Amazing what good weather does for morale. Even with two flats, we made good time today, and 74 miles went by relatively quick. Lots of pictures today, since no rain! Ate giant farmers market strawberries, saw avocado trees, played with my friend’s new dog, and got some major new tan lines. Super attractive.

Day 4: Lompoc

Miserable day. Flooded roads, torrential wind, and rain. Alive, but not all there. Like a delicious Cadbury egg without all of it’s gooey fondant center. Cadbury eggs are delicious.

Day 3: Pismo Beach

Today went splendidly. We woke up before dawn and hit the road in order to get into Salinas before 11 to catch the train for San Luis Obispo. After hellacious headwinds, rain, and mud, we made it to Salinas early enough to catch an earlier bus, putting us in San Luis Obispo 2 hours early. Upon arrival, we ate, drank wonderful coffee, then got back on the road to head to Pismo. After a brief bout of rain and an accidental 4 mile hill, we made it. Tomorrow onto Lompoc (Where? Exactly).

Day 2: Back to Santa Cruz

After an emergency roadside rescue, 4 bike shops, and 8 hours of work, at 9 pm tonight, my bike was complete again. It took a new deraileur, 12 spokes, a chain, and a bit of frame bending, but my bike is better than new. After copious bribes (lunch, beer, etc), the total bill came to under $200. Could have been much much worse.

Plan for tomorrow is to get up at 6 and add the milage we were planning for today onto tomorrow’s ride, since tomorrow is our scheduled- oh-god-we-have-to-make-it-by-Sunday- train day. With only 40 miles of riding anyway, it won’t be bad to tack on some extra milage. Wish us luck!!

Major Setback Numero 1

Deraileur lodged between frame and cassette. Broken chain. Broken spoke. For those of you that don’t speak bike: bad bad news bears.

Morning in Santa Cruz

Day 1: Santa Cruz

Alive! Made it to Santa Cruz in one piece. First three hours in the rain combined with a crazy headwind made for an exciting morning. 10 miles from Santa Cruz, after the sun had set, Caroline got our first flat tire and finished just as it started raining again. Exciting day. Shorter day tomorrow. Onto Monterey in the morning!
